Definitions for the words that show up whenever people argue about AI-generated content. Each entry gives a short definition, a plain-English explanation, where the term came from, and examples you can check against your own feed.

These are working definitions, not dictionary rulings. Where a term is contested, the entry says so.

  • AI brain rotSurreal AI-generated memes built for endless scrolling, and the dulling effect people attribute to watching them.
  • AI fatigueThe exhaustion of having to sort genuine work from generated material, and the disengagement that follows.
  • AI slopLow-quality content mass-produced with generative AI and published with little or no human review.
  • AI spamMachine-generated bulk content used to reach people or ranking systems, usually for money.
  • AI-generated contentContent produced by a generative AI system. A neutral term about provenance, with no judgment attached.

B

  • Brain rotThe supposed decline in mental sharpness blamed on consuming trivial online content. Also used for the content itself.

S

  • SlopContent made carelessly and in bulk. Since 2024, the usual name for unwanted AI-generated material.
  • SlopperSomeone who relies on AI chatbots for decisions and information they could handle themselves.

W

  • WorkslopAI-generated work content that looks finished but lacks the substance to advance the task.
